Energy Price Tracker

As a service to the community I will post on this blog the energy prices for the communities from which I can get information.

My method of determining the real price we pay for energy is to take information from the bills that I receive separate out the variable charges and divide them by the number of units consumed. Then, to compare the price of using different fuels in different cities, I convert the cost per energy units into the price per million BTUs. This way you can see the relative difference in price between heating your home or water with natural gas or electricity (or other fuels). It also allows you to see subtle seasonal changes in the actual price of the fuel. The units I use are the kilowatt hour (kWh) which is the standard metric unit of electrical energy, Mcf stands for 1,000 cubic feet- used to measure natural gas and liquid propane, and MMBTU is one million British Thermal Units- an American Standard unit of heat. For reference, one BTU is about the amount of energy released when you use a safety match.

How you can help- I intend to take all my data from utility bills that have actually been charged to people. This way we get an honest answer about what people are really being charged. I only have this kind of access to my own bills. One city, one month at a time. To have more accurate information, and to incorporate information for different locations, I need your help. If you would like to have your information included, please send me an image of your bills that shows your city, the amount of energy you consume and all charges included in the bill. I will only post averaged data for each city, never personal information. This blog is for the public benefit and I will never 1) use any information I receive for solicitation, 2) give (sell) your information to anyone for any reason, or 3) store any images for longer than it takes to incorporate the data into my averages. Feel free to redact any information that is not pertinent to the data listed above such as names and addresses.
